Arthanomics 2014

Department of Economics: ARTHANOMICS

On the 1st and 2nd of August 2014, the Economics Association of Jai Hind College organised its first ever National level Economics Festival Arthanomics 2014. Arthanomics began as an intra-college Economics festival in 2013. The name Arthanomics was derived from the Vedic Term Arthashastra referring to the ancient Indian treatise on statecraft and economic policy, and Economics.

Prior to the inception of the festival, the Economics Association conducted the annual Economics Seminar. This practice was followed for up to 10 years. The aim of the practice was to imbibe in students the importance of conducting research. In the year 2014-15, the association decided to take the plunge and take Arthanomics to the national level. Having understood the importance of good quality participation in the festival, we wanted to bring together some of the brightest minds of the country and not be restricted by simply Mumbai colleges. By means of the various events, we aimed to develop and propagate the need of practical application of academic learning in the students. The planning and execution of such a large-scale event also resulted in the students honing soft skills like leadership, management, crisis handling and communication.

The underlying theme of Arthanomics 2014-15 was Apocalypse: Begin from the end, and it compromised of 8 events and one guest lecture. All events were structured around the theme. The events were a mix of strategy, quick thinking, diversified knowledge about the field of Economics, communication, wit, out-of-the-box thinking and planning. A brief description of the events is given below: Crime in Catastrophe, Lego, Marketing to Minds, Arthanomics Paper Presentation, Bull and Bears, Lok Sabha, Wiki-You, Punchline:
