The Department of Microbiology was established in the year 1981 with the option of Microbiology as a major subject at the T.Y. B.Sc level. This subject is in great demand and a number of students passing out from our department have completed their ‘Masters’ and ‘Doctorate’ degree. They have been placed in jobs from the microbiology field to diverse fields such as hospital management, pharmaceutical management, media, army, Dietetics, Health Sciences, entrepreneurs and many more.

Academics

The B.Sc in Microbiology degree program at Jai Hind College allows students to gain an Introduction to the field of Microbiology and to explore many of the more specific areas. Students at the undergraduate level receive the training they need to excel in their post graduate careers as well as in their professional careers as microbiologists.

Facilities

The Department has excellent infrastructure for teaching and research. The laboratory is fully air-conditioned and is well equipped. The Department houses an independent library of its own and possesses hundreds of books covering all the branches of Microbiology. The Departmental Library is self sufficient and managed by the students of the Department

Activities of the Department

Student development activities include guest lectures and workshops, alumni interactive sessions, remedial coaching, parent- teacher meetings and training in soft skills, summer training and internships and industrial visits

Faculty and students take up various projects on the following aspects:

• Development of low cost biological treatment programmes for industries.
• Bioremediation
• Microalgae as  an  alternative  to  coal
• Water Analysis
• Quality Study of various food products
• Nanotechnology

Collaboration

Microbiology department started a certificate course in “Basic stem cell biology” for bioscience students of Jai Hind college in 2014.The course was run by our alumnus Dr Vijay Sharma, Director Stem Cell Research Wockhardt Hospitals Ltd. Following topics were covered during the course
Introduction -Stem cell evolution, Historic perspective, Stem cell basics: Types of stem cells
Following practicals are performed by the enrolled students
Practical 1: Isolation of Stromal Vascular Fraction
Practical 2: Isolation of MSCs from SVF
Practical 3: Freezing of MSCs
Practical 4: Thawing of MSCs
Practical 5: Characterization of SVF
Practical6: Staining of differentiated cells
Students had hands on training of all the experiments and the course was an intensive 100 hours of training at the well equipped laboratory of Stem Cell Research ,Wockhardt Hospitals.

In the year 2014-15 the department of Microbiology signed an MOU with the ‘Nirmala Niketan College of Home Sciences’. We conduct a certificate course on ‘Basic Techniques of Microbiology’ for their T.Y.B.Sc students (Foods, Nutrition & Dietetics) and An ‘Advanced Certificate Course in Food Microbiology’ for their post-graduate students We also train their M.Sc students (Food Processing & Preservation) in “Microbial analysis of food quality”. Dr. A.Wadia, Ms P. Sequeira and Dr. M. Ghayal are the guides of the M.Sc students from Nirmala Niketan for their M.Sc dissertation project.
